Vent’anni di Utopia: La storia del Casale che ha cambiato una comunità

C’è un luogo a Roma, nascosto tra le strade di San Paolo, che da vent’anni rappresenta molto più di un semplice spazio fisico. Nel 2004, l’idea di dare vita a “La Città dell’Utopia” nasceva dall’esigenza di creare uno spazio dedicato alla promozione dei valori di pace, giustizia sociale e interculturalità. Il Casale, un tempo abbandonato e in stato di degrado, è stato recuperato grazie al lavoro e alla dedizione di volontar*, associazioni, collettivi e attivist*, che hanno trasformato l’edificio in un centro di attività sociale e culturale.

La Città dell’Utopia” è nata da un desiderio: quello di creare uno spazio libero, aperto, antifascista, antirazzista, transfemminista e pacifista. Un luogo in cui idee, culture, e progetti potessero mescolarsi e fiorire, in cui si potesse sperimentare un modo diverso di vivere insieme, di fare politica dal basso, di condividere saperi e esperienze.

In questi vent’anni, il Casale è stato il palco di innumerevoli eventi: campi di volontariato, laboratori autogestiti, iniziative solidali, festival, momenti di formazione e sensibilizzazione. È stato un rifugio per chi cercava risposte alternative, una culla per nuovi progetti di sostenibilità, di giustizia sociale, di accoglienza.

Ma il vero cuore de “La Città dell’Utopia” non sono solo le sue attività, sono le persone che l’hanno abitata, anche solo per un giorno. Attivist*, student*, migrant*, artist*, educator*, volontar*. Ognuno ha portato qualcosa di unico, e ognuno è uscito arricchito, con la consapevolezza che esistono ancora spazi in cui si può sognare un mondo migliore e lavorare insieme per realizzarlo.

Oggi, a vent’anni di distanza, ci fermiamo per riflettere sul cammino percorso, per guardare a tutto ciò che abbiamo costruito, ma anche per immaginare insieme i prossimi vent’anni. Ecco perché dal 21 al 22 settembre apriremo le porte del Casale per un weekend di festa, di riflessione e di celebrazione.

Festeggeremo il Casale, questo piccolo grande pezzo di Utopia che ha resistito e prosperato grazie all’impegno e alla passione di una comunità. Sarà un’occasione per ritrovarci, per condividere storie e ricordi, per riaccendere lo spirito che ci ha portati fin qui, e per guardare insieme verso il futuro, con la stessa voglia di cambiamento che ci ha accompagnati in questi vent’anni.

Ti invitiamo a far parte di questa celebrazione, a venire, a conoscere o ritrovare La Città dell’Utopia, a far sentire la tua voce e a unirti a noi in questo importante anniversario.

Questo spazio è tuo, nostro, di chiunque voglia costruire un mondo diverso. Vieni a festeggiare con noi. Viva Utopia!

There is a place in Rome, hidden among the streets of San Paolo, that, for the past 20 years, has represented much more than just a physical space. In 2004, the idea of giving life to ‘La Città dell’Utopia’ arose from the need to create a space dedicated to the values of peace, social justice and interculturalism. The Casale, once abandoned and in a state of decay, was recovered thanks to the work and dedication of volunteers, associations, collectives and activists. Together, they transformed the building into a centre of social and cultural activity.

La Città dell’Utopia was born from a desire to create a free, open, anti-fascist, anti-racist, trans-feminist and pacifist space. This should be a place where different ideas, cultures, and projects could mingle and flourish, where people could experience a different way of living together, where they could interact with politics from below, and everyone could share their knowledge and experiences.

In these past 20 years, the Casale has been the stage for countless different events: from volunteer camps to self-managed workshops, solidarity initiatives, festivals, trainings and awareness-raising events. It has been a refuge for those seeking alternative answers and a cradle for new projects of sustainability, social justice, and hospitality.

But the real heart of ‘La Città dell’Utopia’ is not just its activities, it is the people who have inhabited the place, even if only for a day. Activists, students, migrants, artists, educators and volunteers. Everyone has brought something unique, and everyone has come away enriched, with the awareness that there are still spaces where one can dream of a better world and work together to achieve it.


Today, 20 years later, we pause to reflect on the path we have travelled so far. We look back on all that we have built, but we also look forward to the next 20 years together. That is why on 21 and 22 September we will open the doors of the Casale for a weekend of celebration, debate and reflection.


We will celebrate the Casale, this little piece of Utopia that has endured and prospered thanks to the commitment and passion of the community. This will be an opportunity to get together again, to share our stories and memories, to rekindle the spirit that has brought us this far, and to look towards the future together, with the same desire for change that has accompanied us these past twenty years.
